Our focus now shifts to the finishes, an opportunity to not only enhance the homeowners’ style but also create beautiful aesthetics that add durability and sustainability.
Designing the exterior walls began with a thoughtful mix of wood, metal, and brick. Warm wood siding contrasts with sharp metal panels and calm white-beige brick, creating a balanced composition. In addition to aesthetics, each finish was chosen for its durability and low maintenance, and wherever possible, materials were sourced from local manufacturers to reduce the carbon footprint while supporting regional craftsmanship.

Inside, Gillian Gillies Interiors extended and reinforced the architectural vision. The curve of the stairs, lit by a skylight above, is echoed in custom furniture and a soft, neutral palette that runs throughout the interiors. This collaboration between architecture and interior design ensures the home feels unified and intentional.
Like any project, challenges arose during construction. Coordinating the skylight installation required particular attention. 3D modelling helped builders visualize how the slanted skylight profile integrated with the sloped roof, while extensive on-site discussions with Cliff & Evans clarified finishing details, such as transitions between the wood siding and metal panels and precise alignment of soffit materials. Deficiencies were resolved through meticulous walk-throughs and open communication with all consultants.

At Leaside House, finishes were more than surface treatments–they embodied our sustainability values while meeting the client’s goals for durability, comfort, and long-term value. Highly durable, low-maintenance, and locally sourced materials aligned with their desire for resilience, reduced carbon impact, and responsible supply chains. The use of low-VOC paint finishes, caulking, and sealants throughout the interiors further reduced embodied carbon and improved indoor air quality. High-performance detailing, including airtight construction and minimized thermal bridging, ensured energy efficiency and year-round comfort. In this way, the design fulfilled both Dewson’s commitment to sustainability and the client’s vision for a beautiful, enduring, and efficient home.
